Bike for Bibles

Bike for Bibles

My name is Donald Green. I am a retired senior, nearing my mid-80's. I am also a cancer survivor. I have been a member of the local YMCA, here in my hometown of Grand Falls-Windsor, Newfoundland and Labrador, for a number of years.

At the beginning of this year, for the benefit of my health, I embarked on a journey across our beautiful island at the YMCA - a distance of 905 KM from St. John's to Port aux Basques.

Then, the thought occurred to me - why not use this as an opportunity to raise funds for The Gideons, an organization of which I have been a long-time member. The passion of The Gideons is to share God's Word with people all over the world, especially in countries where the demands are so great, such as China and Malawi. Hence, my project, "Bike for Bibles."

I have set a goal of $10,000. At a cost of $5 for Scripture, this would enable The Gideons to place 2,000 copies of God's Word in the hands of those still waiting.

I humbly and prayerfully appeal to everyone for your support in this endeavor, especially that of my fellow Gideon members across Canada. There is no greater gift we can give to the needy, hurting people than a copy of God's Word!

Update from Don, May 29th, 2018:

"As of May 28th, I have biked a distance of 719kms. That takes me 32kms past the city of Cornerbrook and 186kms short of my destination, Port aux Basques. Of course, this is being done on a stationary bike. I am greatly encouraged by the support I have received since I began this project. Thank you all so much. If you have not already participated, why not do so today. Providing scriptures for those who have none has eternal value. Thanks again and God Bless, Don"

Update from Don, July 17th, 2018:

On Friday, July 6, with my son David on the bike next to me at the "Y", we, together, did the last 3kms of my trip to across the island. How delightful it was to have David home from Nova Scotia and participating with me in the final stretch. Thanks, Son!

The has been quite an adventure for me. I truly experience the words of Philippians 4:13 "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." I thank God for the physical strength provided, as well as helping me to stay focused during the past six months and seeing the task through to completion.

Many thanks to the GIDEONS, to the YMCA and to all my family, especially David & Quinta and Susan Leo. Also, to many other wonderful people for your prayers words of encouragement and the excellent financial response.

Now, I can truly identify with quote for January 1, 2018 on the Calendar of Inspirational Sayings given to me by my wife for Christmas. Famous author C.S. Lewis penned the words, "You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream." With the help of God and many open-hearts and open-hands, together, we just proved that! Over $10,000 has been raised, thus providing 2000+ Bibles for those still waiting for their own copy of the Word of God.

  • I am Chasimba from Malawi, the pastor of Last Church, but I had no Bible. It was my prayer to God to give me another Bible because the one I had was torn apart - and today God has answered my prayer. This was the Bible I was using.

Be blessed mister Green, Psalm 103 1-5 Praise Yahweh, my soul! All that is within me, praise his holy name! Praise Yahweh, my soul, and don't forget all his benefits; who forgives all your sins; who heals all your diseases; who redeems your life from destruction; who crowns you with loving kindness and tender mercies; who satisfies your desire with good things, so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's.

Hi Uncle Don! I just saw your Facebook post on your Bike for Bibles campaign! Suzan posted it I think. Looks like you don't have any donations yet, so I'll be the very 1st to chip in at $20. I'm not sure how to send it though! E-transfer maybe? Let me know! E-transfer would probably be the easiest way! Glad to see that you are keeping in shape, both body and mind! What a creative idea! If possible, I would also like a tax receipt made out to me, Nadine Hollett, and sent to my address at: 17 Prince of Wales Street St. John's, NL A1C 4N1 Hope to hear from you soon! Nadine :)
